5.3 Chem Study Guide Flashcards
What is London Dispersion?
A temporary attraction between two molecules.
What is a Dipole-Dipole bond?
A bond between the dipoles of a molecule.
What is a hydrogen bond?
Bonding between hyrdrogen and things like oxygen, nitrogen, and flourine.
What are the intermolecular bonds ranked strongest to weakest?
Hydrogen bond, Dipole-Dipole, and London Dispersion.
What is a polar bond?
A bond where the attraction forces are not equally distributed, resulting in each atom getting a partial charge.
What is a nonpolar bond?
A bond where the attraction forces are equally distributed throughout the molecule.
What bonds can form London Dispersion?
All bonds.
What bonds can form hydrogen bonds? Why?
Only polar molecules with a hydrogen or nitrogen or oxygen or flourine can form a hydrogen bond. This is because they are the only atoms that can join together to create this strong bond.
What bonds can form dipole-dipole connections?
Only polar molecules.
