4.3 Study Guide Flashcards
What is negative feedback?
Negative feeback is when the effects caused by the initial change negate the initial change.
What is an example of negative feedback?
When the blood sugar in the body increases, insulin is produced which helps get rid of the excess sugar.
What is an example of a greenhouse gas?
CO2
What does greenhouse gas do?
It traps heat in the atmosphere.
How is CO2 stored in ice cores?
CO2 is stored in ice cores through organisms that were preserved in the ice.
Do CO2 levels stay the same throughout all time?
No, levels of CO2 go up and down all the time.
Are CO2 and temperature related in any way?
Yes. As the carbon increases, so does the temperature.
What is a positive feedback loop?
When effects of an initial change only increase/amplify the effects of the initial change.
What is an example of positive feedback?
When there is more greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, the earth heats up and glaciers melt. When glaciers melt, they release methane reserves and in turn increase the amount of greenhouse gas in the air. Then the cycle repeats.
