5.2 Study Guide Flashcards
What happens in a covalent bond?
Two atoms share/fight over electrons.
What happens in an ionic bond?
One atom takes electron(s) from another atom.
What type of atoms do covalent bonding?
Only nonmetals with nonmetals.
What type of atoms do ionic bonding?
One nonmetal and one metal.
What is the bond length in a covalent bond?
The distance the two atoms stay from each other while sharing electrons, where the potential energy is the least.
What does an ionic bond create?
An ionic crystal.
After the atoms in an ionic bond tranfer electrons, what happens?
The atoms are oppositely charged from each other so they stay in a bond.
How is a covalent bond written?
The atoms’ names are listed, as well as the exact number of each individual atom in the bond (written in a a prefix).
How is an ionic bond written?
The abreviations of the names of the atoms are listed together, with the ratio of the atoms to each other written down in subscript.
