2.1 Test Study Guide Flashcards
What is the difference between population density and distribution?
Density is how MANY organisms of the same kind are in an area, while distribution is HOW the organisms are spread out.
What kind of population distribution is random sampling good for?
Uniform populations.
What kind of population uses the random population distribution?
A population that has plenty of resources and limited social interaction.
What is the Mark and Recapture method good for?
Animals that move a lot and won’t just stay in the same place.
Why do some organisms use the uniform populations distribution?
The organisms can be territorial, have limited social interactions, or have limited resources.
What is a clumped distribution pattern?
A population pattern in which the organisms stay in groups.
What population pattern will an organism most likely have if it is very social?
Clumped
How a population is spaced out is… ?
Distribution
What population pattern will an organism most likely have if it is very territorial?
Uniform
What population pattern will an organism most likely have if it has a lot of resources and not a lot of social needs?
Random
How do you use the Mark and recapture technique to find the population of a species?
You capture the organism, mark it, then release it. After giving the organisms time, you recapture a group, see how many are marked, and calculate how many organisms there are in the population.
