Difference between polar and nonpolar covalent bonding?
Polar occurs when two nonmetals with slightly different electronegativity bond covalently
Nonpolar occurs between two nonmetals with the same electronegativity bond covalently
What type of bond will occur between the two elements?
- Potassium (K)
- Chlorine (Cl)
Ionic since it is a metal bonding with a nonmetal.
How does electronegativity affect the type of bond?
Ionic usually occurs when two atoms have a large difference in electronegativity and between nonmetals and metals.
Covalent usually occurs when two atoms have the same electronegativity (or a slight difference in electronegativity for polar covalent bonding) and usually occurs between two nonmetals.
