1.3 Flashcards
What is a hypothesis?
A testable statement that clearly states a prediction based on evidence
What is a control group
The standard set of data to which comparisons are made to in an experiment
What is the independent variable?
The variable that changes (x-axis)
What is the variable that changes called?
The independent variable (x-axis)
What is the dependent variable?
The outcome of the independent variable (y-axis)
What is the outcome of the independent variable called?
The dependent variable (y-axis)
What is the importance of a control group?
To eliminate other possibilities that could render the set of data inaccurate
Suppose an experiment is made involving a bee in different environments.
Which of these groups would be the control group?
An area with heavy rainfall
An area with a temperate climate
A desert
An area with a temperate climate
What is the use of error bars in a bar graph?
To show how the standard deviation of that group
What do overlapping error bars tell us?
They tell us how significant the variance is.
Overlap = difference is not statistically significant
Less overlap = difference is probably not statistically significant
No overlap = difference may or may not be statistically significant (you cannot be sure)
