4.3 Flashcards
Greenhouse Effect
An effect in which the Earth retains most of the heat from the sun.
Greenhouse Gases
Gases that trap infrared light (heat) in the atmosphere.
Positive Feedback Loop
A type of feedback loop in which the output positively affects the input
A > B = more A
Negative Feedback Loop
A type of feedback loop in which the output negatively affects the input
A > B = less A
What do greenhouse gases do?
Greenhouse gases absorb heat, trapping it in the atmosphere.
Why is the greenhouse effect important?
It gives us enough heat to maintain life.
How have humans affected the greenhouse effect?
Humans have caused a large surplus in greenhouse gases, causing it to make the greenhouse effect work much more, causing the Earth to heat up more than it should.
How does ice tell us patterns of CO2 and climate change over the past 800,000 years?
Ice can have trapped carbon, letting us date it and also seeing the amount, we can get a general amount of CO2 in the past 800,000 years.
A graph of the last 600,000 years shows the amount of carbon dioxide during those years. From a period of about 120 to 200,000 years ago, the amount of carbon dioxide spiked. What can you predict happened to the temperature during that time and the overall trend of temperature during the whole graph?
We can predict that the temperature increased as CO2 increased and decreased as CO2 decreased.
