1.2 Flashcards
What is Standard Deviation?
A measure of variance from the mean.
What is length measured in? (metric). What does it measure?
Meters (m). It measures the distance between two points
What is a measure of variance from the mean?
Standard Deviation
How is mass measured (metric)? What does it measure?
Grams (g). It measures the amount of matter in an object.
How is volume measured (metric). What does it measure
Liters (L). It measures the amount of space an object takes up.
How is time measured (metric)? What does it measure?
Seconds (s). It measures the duration between two certain points in time.
How is temperature measured (metric)? What does it measure?
Celsius (C). It measures the amount of kinetic energy.
What are the main metric prefixes (from largest to smallest)?
kilo, base (m, L, g, etc.), centi, mili, micro, nano, pico
What is the importance of graphs (specifically line graphs)?
To record and compare data over periods of time.
What is the independent variable? Where does it go on a graph?
It is the variable that changes and affects the outcome of the dependent variable. It goes on the x-axis or horizontal axis on typical graph.
What is the dependent variable? Where does it go on a graph?
The dependent variable is the outcome of the independent variable. It goes on the y-axis or vertical axis on a typical graph.
What is the line of best fit on a graph?
A straight line that estimates the trend of the graph.
What is on the y-axis of a graph?
The dependent variable.
What is on the x-axis of a graph?
The independent variable.
What is interpolation?
To make predictions within data given.
What is extrapolation?
To make predictions outside of the data given.
What does it mean to make predictions outside of the data given?
Extrapolation
What does it mean to make predictions within data given?
Interpolation
When there are two sets of data, how should you handle it?
By using a key to differentiate between the two sets of data.
How should I scale my graph?
By getting the number of variables in a set of data, then estimating a scale that best fits that range.
How do I find the Standard Deviation of a set of data?
Step 1: Find the mean of your dataset.
Step 2: Get the variance. To get the variance you need to subtract the mean from every value squared, add it all up, then divide it by the number of data points. (modeled equation: (a-b)^2 + (c-d)^2 = g)
Step 3: Take the square root of your variance and that is your standard deviation.
What is variance?
Variance is the difference from one data point and the mean, used to get standard deviation (modeled through: (a-b)^2)
How should I title my graph?
Title your graph clearly and straight to the point, typically it is “[y-variable] versus [x-variable]”
What is the relationship between the independent and dependent variables?
The dependent variables, essentially the outcome, changes based the independent variable. The independent variable is the only variable that changes on its own throughout the graph.
Would age be a dependent or independent variable?
Independent variable.
How many grams are in 200 centigrams
2 grams.
How many liters are in 10 kiloliters.
10,000 liters.
How many kilograms are in 40 grams.
0,04 grams
How many meters are in 100 millimeters
0.1 meters
Given the data set (12, 45, 23, 15) what is the standard deviation?
Mean = 23.75
Variance = ~166.7
Standard Deviation = ~12.9
How do you convert from one metric prefix to another?
Divide or multiply your current prefix to your wanted prefix based on its conversion (divide if wanted prefix is smaller, multiply if wanted prefix is bigger)
What is the difference between mass and volume?
Mass measures the amount of matter in an object while volume measures the space the object takes up.
What are the tools for measuring measurements?
Length = Meter stick
Mass = Scale
Volume = Graduated Cylinder
Time = Stopwatch
Temperature = Thermometer
How do I calculate mean/average? How do I calculate median?
To get the mean/average you take the sum of all the data points and divide by the number of data points. To get the median, you need to find the center of your data set (largest to smallest). If there is an even number of data points, get the average of the two most middle data points.
What are all the types of best fit lines.
Direct - As X increases, Y increases.
Indirect - As X increases, Y decreases.
Constant - As X increases, Y stays the same.
Non-linear - Constant changes to Y as X increases, making it seem exponential or logarithmic.
Peak - As X increases, Y increases up until a certain point where after that it decreases.
