5.1 Cells N Tissues Adapt Immunity Thymus Flashcards
B cells complete most of their development in?
the bone marrow in all animals, except birds
In birds, B cells complete their development in?
a special organ at the hindgut called the Bursa of Fabricius
Each mature B cell produces antigen specific?
receptors (Igs)
Where and when do mature B cell produces antigen specific receptors (Igs)?
at the cell membrane when they are released from the bone marrow
Mature naïve B cells express on their cell surface?
IgM and IgD
Effector B cells secrete? and are called?
IgG, IgA, IgM, or IgE and are called B plasma cells
Memory B cells express? where?
IgG, IgA, or IgE on their cell surface
Secondary Lymphoid organs are sites where WHAT originates?
adaptive immune responses to antigen originate
Lymph nodes are? Amount? Location?
a secondary type of lyphoid organs
*-500-600 nodes that run along the lymphatic channels
Each lymph node has afferent lymphatic vessels that allow for entry of?
antigen with or without the help of macrophage lineage cells
B-cells and T-cells are located where in the lymph node?
- -T cells are present in the paracortical areas of the cortex
- -B cells are in follicles of the cortex
Ongoing immune responses take place in the?
germinal center of secondary follicle of the lymph node
What percent of B-cells and T-cells are in the Germinal Center?
- -95% dividing B cells, dying B cells, or B cells changing into plasma cells
- -5% T cells which are helping out the B cell response
Some plasma cells migrate to the? (Germinal Center)
medulla of lymph node
plasma cells in the medulla of lymph nodes secrete ____ that flows into ____? (Germinal Center)
secrete antibody that flows into efferent lymphatics
If they don’t migrate to the medulla, B cells migrate from the efferent lymphatics to? (Germinal Center)
the bone marrow where they secrete antibody
some T cells migrate out through efferent lymphatics to go to site of infection. What T cell type is this?
CD8 T cells that are now cytotoxic T cells
*remember they are specific to viral infected cells
Th1 CD4 T cells that help out?
Germinal Center
inflammatory macrophage responses and their own cytotoxic T cell responses
Th17 CD4 T cells that help out?
Germinal Center
neutrophil responses
primary vs scondary follicles?
primary= no immune response, resting B-cells secondary= are going through immune response, contain responding B-cells in germinal center
What two areas of lymph node contain resting B-cells?
primary follicle and marginal zone
What three areas of lymph node contain T-cells?
- paracortex
- interfollicular zone
- 5% T-cells in germinal center (CD 4 Th2 and Tfh)
What type of T-cells are found in germinal center? What do they do?
CD4 Th2 and Tfh (only 5%)
*help proliferate, trasition to plasma cells, move to medulla, and know which Ig to make
B plasma cells migrate from secondary folliclular germinal center to either the lymph node medulla or back to bone marrow. Where do they survive longer?
Bone marrow= 3 weeks; therefore we think most of free floating plasma cells in circulation come from bone marrow
Lymph node= 3 days
