3.3: Planes of Motion Flashcards
What are the 3 planes of motion?
Sagittal, Frontal, Transverse
What are the divides of the sagittal plane?
right and left; lies vertically
What are the motions in sagittal plane?
flexion/extension
Examples: Squat, bicep curl, lunge, walking
What are other names for the frontal plane?
coronal or lateral plane
What are the divides of the frontal plane?
front half (anterior) and back half (posterior); lies vertically
What are the motions of frontal plane?
abduction/adduction
Examples: Lateral raise, pull-down, side bends, military press
What are the divides of the transverse plane?
below (inferior) and above (superior); lies horizontally
What are the motions of the transverse plane?
internal/external rotation
Examples: Rotation at waist (swinging club or bat), Bench Press
Motion of a limb superiorly, only occurring in the scapula
Elevation
Motion of a limb in inferior position (scapula)
Depression
of the spine, side to side movement, bending of vertebrae in frontal plane away from midline in lateral direction
Lateral flexion
Internal rotation is also considered ______
Medial
External rotation is also considered ______
Lateral
_______ and _______ occur at the elbow to rotate the wrist or can describe ankle rotating the foot in transverse plane.
Pronation, supination
Protraction is also known as _______
Scapular Abduction (moving away from midline of body)
