What does is mean by sport being a commodity?
Sport is a commodity that can be bought or sold.
How does the media use sport as a commodity?
- Media companies pay the sport/ club/ NGB body for the rights to televise -> e.g. Sky/ TNT buy TV rights from the Premier League for football
- Pay per view/ subscription channels sell sport to the viewers -> e.g. Sky / TNT
- Sold to commercial companies - breaks in play sold for advertising
- Sold to other media companies so they can show the sport on their networks.
