Definition of attitudes
A predisposition to act in a particular way towards something or someone in a person’s environment
Unstable beliefs:
can be changed and controlled
feelings and actions
an enduring emotional and behavioural response
attitude object
can be places, situations and behaviour of other people
What are the factors affecting attitude formation?
- socialisation
- past experiences
- religious beliefs

- significant others/ role models
How does socialisation affect attitude?
friends playing sport may influence you to play sport
How do past experiences affect attitude?
negative experiences in P.E. lessons may discourage from playing sport
How do religious beliefs affect attitude?
against Muslim religion for women to show skin in public places
How does the media affect attitude formation?
newspaper articles on benefits of exercise can lead to positive attitudes
How do significant others affect attitude formation?
parents who take part in physical activity should encourage children to do so
What are the components of at the attitude triadic model?

What is cognitive?
beliefs towards an attitude object
e.g. running is good for your health
What is affective?
emotions/ feelings towards an attitude/ object
e.g. I enjoy running
What is behavioural?
attitudes towards an attitude object
e.g. I run 3 times a week
What is cognitive dissonance?
The process of creating disharmony between the components of attitude
