14
Q

What is the approximate ideal testicular tone?

A

like a flexed bicep (at breeding time)
if lots of force is needed - suggests fibrosis
if low resistance/flabby - suggests degenerative change

16
Q

Does epididymitis resolve itself?

A

No

17
Q

What is a lesion of the scrotal LN?

A
caseous lymphadenitis
(be aware of inguinal hernia)
18
Q

What are the components of a genital examination?

A
Inspect prepuce +/- penis
Rectal exam (bulls only)
19
Q

Outline papillomas in bulls

A

most commonly found on prepuce
seen in younger bulls, prior to mating
medically resolves after mating

20
Q

What does a haematoma near the sigmoid flexure suggest?

A

ruptured penis

poor prognosis

21
Q

In which species do you see persistent frenulums?

A

bulls only, not rams

22
Q

Name 2 semen collection methods

A

artificial vagina

electroejaculator

23
Q

Outline electroejaculation

A

Probe in rectum
Manual stimulation of pelvic urethra along the ampullae (2-3 second stimulation, 1 second interval)
Animal doesn’t have to be trained to do this but good restraint is essential!

24
Q

Outline artificial vagina semen collection

A

animal has to be trained to do this (can even be trained to jump to a cow that isn’t even in oestrous)

25
Q

What aspects of semen are evaluated?

A
gross
Motility
Morphology (% normal/abnormal)
Presence of WBCs (+ indicates sensitivity testing required)
\+/- concentration, bacterial culture
26
Q

What aspects of libido are assessed?

A

Ability to mount and mate
Penile abormalities
Leg or back injuries - exacerbated here

27
Q

What is libido testing influenced by?

A

age
shyness - unfamiliar situation
hierachy

28
Q

What additional semen evaluation tests may be conducted? 3

A

Blood test (BVD Ag, Brucella ovis)
Preputial wash - Trichomonas foetus, Campylobacter foetus venerealis
Bacterial culture of semen

29
Q

How do you evaluate results to write a report?

A

DON’T write fertile or infertile!
Relates to day of exam

Classifications:
sound/satisfactory
temporarily unsound, classification deferred
unsound or unsatisfactory
