2F - The Protein Secretory Pathway Flashcards
exocytosis
a type of bulk
transport that moves large
substances out of a cell
- contents of a vesicle are released from a cell
the protein secretory pathway involves…
various different organelles that produce, fold, modify, and package proteins, eventually exporting them from the cell via the process
of exocytosis.
stages involved in exocytosis
A vesicle containing secretory products is transported to the plasma membrane.
2 The membrane of the vesicle fuses with the plasma membrane.
3 The secretory products are released from the cell into the extracellular environment.
what main organelles are part of the secretory pathway
ribosome, rer, golgi apparatus and transport and secretory vesicles
ribosomes role in secretory pathways
site of protein synthesis
assemble polypeptide
chains from amino acids by translating mRNA.
rer’s role in secretory pathways
Folds and transports proteins
- if protein is going to be secreted, the ribosome is usually attached to the rer, allows for the correct folding
transport protein’s role in secretory pathways
contain protien
buds off from rer and attatches to golgi membrane
releases the protein into its lumen.
golgi apparatus’ role in secretory pathways
Modifies and packages proteins
- proteins can have chemical groups (e.g. sugar molecules) added or removed
- often packaged into secretory vesicles for export or
released directly into the cytosol for use by the cell.
secretory vesicles role in secretory pathways
contains protein
buds of golgi apparatus
travels through cytoplasm, attaches to plasma membrane
- releases proteins into extracellular environment through exocytosis
