2.6: Fluid Thioglycollate Broth Flashcards
Aerotolerance:
-the ability or inability to live in the presence of oxygen
Obligate aerobes:
-oxygen is required
-growth is on top of tube
Facultative anaerobes:
-can grow in anaerobic and aerobic conditions
-growth throughout the tube
Obligate anerobes:
-grow in the absence of oxygen
-growth at bottom of test tube
Aerotolerant anaerobes:
-only anaerobic growth but growth continues presence of oxygen
-growth is even, oxygen has no effect
Microaerophiles:
-only aerobic growth
-oxygen required at a lower conc. than atmosphere
-growth in the middle
KEY COMPONENTS OF MEDIUM:
-yeast extract
-sodium thioglycollate
-L-cystine
-resazurin
-small amount of agar
Yeast extract=
-pancreatic digestion of casein provide nutrients
Sodium thioglycollate and L-cystine
-reduce oxygen to water
Resazurin
-acts as a O2 indicator
Small amount of agar=
-included to slow oxygen diffusion
-pink=
coloress=
-oxidized, aerobic
-reduced, anaerobic
What is the purpose of the Fluid Thioglycollate Medium?
-observe aerotolerance
The component or components on fluid thioglycollate broth that reduce oxygen to water is/are (Select all that apply)
-L cystine
-sodium thioglycollate
Where an anaerobic organism will grow in the Fluid Thioglycollate Medium tube?
-the organism will sink to the bottom
