19. Attention Flashcards
Perceptual Experience
- Perceptual experience in response to a stimulus event is a response of the
whole person. - The information provided when your sensory receptors are stimulated, your
final perception depends on who you are, whom you are with, and what you
expect, want, and value.
what are the types of perception measuring
qualitative
quantitative
when you “say what you see or feel” it is measured by
qualitative measurements
why are qualitative measurements imp
Important in practice, given that perception is not reliably objective
(i.e. perceptions of pain will not always ‘make sense’ from a medical
perspective, but such self-reports are important nonetheless)
Quantitative measurements are
Absolute thresholds: the minimum intensity required for the senses to
perceive stimulation, at least half of the time.
these are examples of
quantitative measurements
list and explain the 5 quantitative measurements (hint: senses)
It’s the least amount needed of smith in order to sense it
- vision: seeing a candle in a dark room
- Hearing a nearby watch ticking. In a quiet room
- taste: tasting a teaspoon of sugar in 2 gallons of water
- smell: smelling a drop of perfume in a small home
- touch: feeling the pressure of a fly fall on ur cheek
-what is subliminal priming
Factors affecting perception is
Sensorial perception
Looking is not always the same as actually seeing this is an example of
Attention
Inattentional blindness is
When changes are not noticed/ detected by individuals
An example of attention the ____ and ____ experiment
Simons and levin experiment
“ the switcheroo” that went unnoticed by 50%
Explain simons and levins study further
Experimenters look similar but not identical
Some obvious differences that are slight like one had a white collar peaking through and the other didn’t
Listen to lecture for attention biases
