Constipation?
Poo become hard and lumpy, making them painful or difficult to get out
Symptom?
Change in usual bowel movement pattern.
Hard or lumpy bowel movements.
Difficulty passing bowel movements or straining.
Gas, wind, bloating or stomach cramps and discomfort.
The feeling of being unable to completely empty the bowel.
The feeling that there is something blocking your bowel.
Causes?
Dehydration,
Lack of dietary fiber,
Physical inactivity,
Ignoring the urge
Certain medications(antacids, iron supplements, opioid pain relievers, diuretics, antidepressant).
Treatment?
Bulk forming (fibre) laxatives: Psyllium powder ( 2-3 days to causes bowel motions)
Osmotic laxatives: Coloxyl ( mild, suitable for children elderly and pregnancies )
Lactulose (takes 1 to 3 days to cause a bowel motion.)
Molaxole sachets: Mix the contents of 1 sachet with a 1/2 glass of water (about 125 mL). Stir well until all the powder has dissolved and drink it.
Stool Softeners:
Docusate ( 12-72 hr to act ) Work as Stimulant:
The docusate enema usually causes a bowel motion within 30 minutes.
For opioid patient with constipation
Self care?
Drinking more fluids, eating more high-fibre foods and getting regular exercise may help to relieve constipation. Using stool softeners and laxatives may also help.
