Cough?
Infection caused by viruses or bacteria on airways
Dry Cough: known as Non productive, No Mucus
Wet cough/chesty: Also known as a productive cough, Have mucous/phlegm.
Harsh, barking, or whooping sound
Cause?
Asthma, Cold and flu (viral), Bronchitis, Cold and chest infection for children 6 to 12 years (Upper respiratory).
Symptoms?
Sneezing
Coughing
Runny nose
Nose congestion (block nose)
Treatment?
Symptoms relief: such as runny nose and cough. They do not cure the infection.
OTC medicines are not recommended for children under 6 years of age
Only labelled as safe for children should be given to children 6 years of age and older.
For children older than 12 months, honey can help soothe their cough.
Vapour rubs can be applied to their chest and back. (little scientific evidence as to how well they work) not recommended for babies under 3 months. Avoid putting the rub near the nostril area.
Red Flags?
Breathing difficulties
High fever 38.5 C
Child suffering more than 4 weeks
Can hear wheezing or whistling sound from chest
Self Care?
Rest and intake hot water
Paracetamol (Pamol) to reduce pain or fever
Keeping your home smoke free, warm, clean and dry
