05d. Biomechanics - Newtons laws Flashcards
List Newton’s 1st law of motion
An object will remain at rest or continue in a state of constant motion unless acted upon by external force to change its state of motion.
List Newton’s 2nd law of motion
The rate of acceleration of a body is directly proportional to the force applied to it and in the direction in which the force is applied.
List Newton’s 3rd law of motion
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
List Newton’s 1st law of angular motion
The angular motion of a body remains constant unless acted upon by an external torque.
List Newton’s 2nd law of angular motion
A torque applied to an object will produce a change in angular motion in the direction of the applied torque that is directly proportional to the size of the torque and inversely proportional to the objects moment of inertia.
List Newton’s 3rd law of angular motion
For every torque there is an equal and opposite torque.
Describe a 2nd Class lever using an example from the human body
Resistance in middle, axis and force at either end. Eg when doing a push up or calf raise.
Describe a 3rd Class lever using an example from the human body
Force/Effort in middle. Axis and resistance at either end. Most common in human body eg bicep curl.
Identify the mechanical advantage of a 2nd class lever
Allow you to produce more force with less effort (greater than 1)
Identify the mechanical advantage of a 3rd class lever
They can increase the range of motion and angular speed at the end of the lever (less than 1)
Describe the force arm in a lever
the distance from the axis to the force
Describe the resistance arm in a lever
distance from the axis to the resistance

Newtons first law
Which of newtons laws states the rate of acceleration of a body is directly proportional to the force applied to it and in the direction in which the force is applied.
Newton’s 2nd law
Which of newtons laws states for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
