01b. Acute Responses - cardiovascular Flashcards
List 6 acute cardiovascular responses
Increased HR, SV, Q, Blood Pressure. Blood redistribution and decreased blood plasma levels
Define Heart Rate
Amount of times the heart beats per minute
Define Stroke Volume
The amount of blood pumped out of the left ventricle per beat
Define Cardiac Output
The amount of blood pumped out of the left ventricle per minute (HR x SV = Q)
Define Blood Pressure
The pressure exerted on the blood vessels
Define Redistribution
When blood is moved to a part of the body that requires the oxygen it is carrying the most.
This occurs via vasoconstriction (decreasing blood flow) of the blood vessels to the areas that doesnt need it and vasodilation (increasing blood flow) to the areas that do.
Must have movement of blood and oxygen to areas of need via vasoconstri
Describe what happens to blood plasma levels in reponse to exercise
It decreases
as a result of sweat (to cool body down)
This causes an increase in blood viscosity which makes it harder to pump
Define AVO2 Difference
The difference between the amount of oxygen in the arteries and the veins.
It indirectly measures how much oxygen the muscles use.
What happens to SV as intensity increases from sub max to max and why?
It plateaus as it has reached its maximum already due to its finite capacity.
Define venous return
The amount of blood returned to the heart via the veins
What is meant by systolic blood pressure and how does it respond to increased intensity?
WHAT = The pressure in the artery walls when the heart is contracting.
It increases in response to exercise
What is meant by diastolic blood pressure and how does it respond to increased intensity?
WHAT= The pressure in the artery walls when the heart is relaxing (filling with blood)
It remains the same during exercise
only systolic blood pressure should increase in response to exercise
What is the amount of time the heart beats per minute called?
Heart rate (HR)

WHat is the amount of blood pumped out of the left ventricle per minute called?
Cardiac output (Q)
