05c. Biomechanics - Levers Flashcards
Describe a 2nd Class lever using an example from the human body
Resistance in middle, axis and force at either end. Eg when doing a push up or calf raise.
Describe a 3rd Class lever using an example from the human body
Force/Effort in middle. Axis and resistance at either end. Most common in human body eg bicep curl.
Identify the mechanical advantage of a 2nd class lever
Allow you to produce more force with less effort
Identify the mechanical advantage of a 3rd class lever
They can increase the range of motion and speed at the end of the lever
Describe the force arm in a lever
the distance from the axis to the force
Describe the resistance arm in a lever
distance from the axis to the resistance
Force/Effort in middle. Axis and resistance at either end. Most common in human body eg bicep curl.
3rd Class lever

2nd class lever
They can increase the range of motion and angular speed at the end of the lever
3rd class lever
the distance from the axis to the force
force arm
distance from the axis to the resistance
resistance arm
A 3rd class lever has a mechanical advantage of ?
Less than 1
What type of lever has a mechanical advantage of less than 1?
3rd class lever
Which arm, resistance or force arm, increases when increasing the length of a 3rd class level
resistance
When increasing the length of a 3rd class lever, does the resistance arm increase or decrease in length?
increase
