What virus causes Zika?
Flavivirus
What is the vector for Flavivirus/Zika?
Aedes species mosquitos
What is Flavivirus/Zika most commonly associated with?
Travel! (Caribbean and Southwest Pacific regions)
How can Flavivirus/Zika be transmitted to others?
-Sexually
-Maternal/fetal
-Blood product transfusions
-Organ transplants
-Lab exposure
What symptoms are associated with Flavivirus/Zika?
-Most are asymptomatic
If symptomatic:
-Arlthralgias, rash, fever
What is a main concern if someone is pregnant and contracts Flavivirus/Zika?
Can cause fetal defects like microcephaly (improper brain development of fetus, small head size) and ocular development issues
How can you diagnose Flavovirus/Zika?
-Acute infection: PCR test in the first 3-4 days
-Serology (IgG, igM): will take 1-14 days to be detectable
-PREGNANT WOMEN MUST BE SCREENED EVEN FOR POTENTIAL EXPOSURE
Is there a treatment for Flavivirus/Zika?
No cure, but body should clear it eventually
Supportive care: hydration, acetaminophen for fever and aches
