How is C. parvum spread?
Contaminated water
What is the pathogenesis of Cryptosporidium?
-Resistant to chlorination of water
-VERY FEW CYSTS NEEDED TO CAUSE INFECTION, consuming a few can cause disease
*VERY pathogenic
Who is at high risk for Cryptosporidium infection?
-Those in institutional settings
-Travelers
-Hikers
How does a Crytposporidium infection present?
Acute: large volume watery diarrhea, cramping, occasional fever
Self limiting unless immunocompromised
How can cryptosporidium be diagnosed?
-Antigen testing
-spores/parasites special or acid fast stain (call lab)
How can Cryptosporidium be treated?
-Treatment not usually indicated
-Symptomatic treatment
If Immunocompromised:
-Nitazoxanide
