What kind of pathogen is Vibrio?
Bacteria
Is Vibrio gram positive or negative?
Gram negative
What would Vibrio look like on a microscope slide?
Pink cocci/bacillus (rods and spheres)
Is Vibrio aerobic or anaerobic?
Aerobic (O2)
What is a strain of Vibrio?
Vibrio cholerae (cholera)
What is the reservoir for Vibrio?
Water borne illness
Where do Vibrio outbreaks usually happen?
-Endemic outbreak disease in places with contaminated water sources (Now in Caribbean)
What is the pathogenesis of Vibrio?
Toxin mediated disease which incubation time is about 1-2 days
How would a Vibrio infection present?
-RICE WATER DIARRHEA (profuse, pale, watery)
-DEHYDRATION which can lead to metabolic acidosis (kidney function, build up of acid)
-Morbidity (health problems) can occur from severe dehydration and shock (can be within 1 day)
How can a Vibrio infection be diagnosed?
-Culture
-PCR
-Antigen Test (contact lab because of special methods)
How can a Vibrio infection be treated?
REHYDRATION!!!
Antibiotics to decrease length of infection:
-Doxycycline
-Azithromycin
-Bactrim
-Ciprofloxacin
