-Foodborne (stool contamination): Meat, salads, eggs, poultry
*One of the most common gastroenteritis infections
Who is more at risk for developing a Salmonella infection?
High risk in young <5 and old >50 patients, immunocompromised
Can you have Salmonella and not present with infection symptoms?
YES, you can be a chronic carrier of Salmonella and not have any symptoms which may cause spread of the disease unknowingly
How could a Salmonella infection present?
-Acute gastroenteritis: NON-BLOODY diarrhea and cramps
-Mesenteric adenitis: swollen stomach and lymph nodes caused by inflammation of mesenteric fold in abdomen
-Bacteremia may occur in immunosuppressed patients, bone/vascular involvement
-Reiter’s syndrome: reactive arthritis, conjunctivitis (pink eye), urethritis (inflammation of urethra)
-Meningitis may occur in infants
-Bone-osteomyelitis/Septic arthritis
-Vascular aortits/graft infections
What is the treatment for Salmonella infection?
Mild infection: no antibiotics, rehydration
Severe infection:
-Ceftriaxone
-Ciprofloxacin
-Azithromycin
-Bactrim
