Wrist Fractures Flashcards
Borders of snuff box
Base = scaphoid bone
Lateral border = APL, EPB
Medial border = EPL
Mechanism that causes trapezium fracture
Axial compression of the thumb metacarpal into the trapezium bone
Which distal radius fracture is associated with TFCC tears and scapholunate dissociation?
Colles’ fracture
What portion of the scaphoid is most vascular?
Distal 1/3 of the bone
What mechanism can cause hamate fractures?
End swing when hold a bat
What does Bett’s view help diagnose?
Bett’s view is an x-ray view to look for trapezium fracture
Fracture of what part of scaphoid indicates surgical referral
If fracture is in proximal 1/3, refer to ortho
What views of wrist do you get for scaphoid fracture
PA and oblique with ulnar deviation
How do you treat a scaphoid fracture
- If initial x-rays show no fracture, immobilize in thumb spica case for 10-14 days and repeat x-ray
- if X-rays show a fracture, immobilize in thumb spica for 6 weeks, then change to short thumb spica cast
What part of scaphoid is most commonly fractured?
Middle 1/3
How do you treat a hamate fracture
4 to 6 weeks in a short arm cast if nondisplaced. Surgical referral if displaced
How do you treat trapezium fractures
Short arm thumb spica cast if nondisplaced
What is wrist fracture with volar displacement called? Dorsal displacement?
Volar = smith's fracture Dorsal = colles' fracture
