Hip Disorders Flashcards
What part of the hamstrings is most commonly injured
Lateral hamstrings at the myotendinous junction
3 grades of hamstring injuries
Grade 1 = strain
Grade 2 = partial tear
Grade 3 = complete tear
What motion usually causes hamstring injuries
During knee extension, eccentric phase of muscle contraction
Provocative test for hamstring injuries
Knee flexion with patient prone causes paint at the ischial region
Mechanism of injury that causes hip flexor strain
Eccentric overload of psoas OR trying to suddenly flex a fully extended hip
Is piriformis an external or internal hip rotator
External rotator
Provocative test for piriformis syndrome
FAIR test
Flex, Adduct, Internally Rotate
Mechanism of injury that causes piriformis syndrome
Forced internal rotation
What are the 6 main causes of snapping hip syndrome?
External causes: 1. Tight IT band over greater trochanter 2. Tight gluteus maximus over greater trochanter. 3. Trochanteric bursitis Internal causes: 4. Tight iliopsas/tendonitis over iliopectineal eminence 5. Acetabular labral tear 6. Loose bodies in hip joint
If iliopsoas tendonitis is cause of snapping hip, what motion will cause snapping?
Hip flexion
If snapping hip is due to an external cause, where will you have tenderness?
Over IT band or gluteus maximus
If snapping hip is due to an internal cause, where will you have tenderness?
Anterior groin
If patient has external cause of snapping hip syndrome, what provocative test do you want to do?
Internally and externally rotate the hip passively while patient is on side
action of gluteus maximus
Hip adduction
Hip extension
Hip external rotation
Action of TFL
Hip flexion
Hip abduction
Hip internal rotation
