MCL, LCL Sprain, Pronator, CuTS, Flashcards
What is froment’s sign
Thumb IP flexion by FPL (AIN) to compensate for loss of MCP flexion by adductor pollicis (ulnar n.) during key pinch
What nerves do the ligament of struthers, arcade of struthers and arcade of frohse impinge?
Ligament of struthers = Median nerve
Arcade of struthers = ulnar nerve
Arcade of frohse = radial nerve (PIN)
When can patient return to play after MCL injury
After full ROM is regained, usually 3-6 months. If pain after 6 months, refer to surgery
What is the usual mechanism that causes an LCL sprain
Dislocation of elbow
MCL sprain is most likely to occur during what phase of throwing
Acceleration phase of throwing
Tears in what muscles are associated with an MCL sprain
Pronators and flexors
What nerve is affected in pronator syndrome
Median nerve
What part of the MCL is affected in an MCL sprain?
The anterior band
Which band of the MCL is the strongest and most significant stabilizer to valgus stress
The anterior band
What is wartenberg sign
Seen in CuTS where you can’t adduct 5th finger fully due to weak ulnar innervated interossei and lumbricals
In pronator syndrome, what motion aggravates the pain
Pronation of forearm
What is the first ligament that fails after an elbow dislocation
LCL
How do you examine the MCL of the elbow?
Flex the elbow to 20-30º and apply valgus stress
In pronator syndrome, what are the possible structures that may be compressing the median nerve?
- Ligament of struthers
- Pronator teres
- 2 heads of FDS
- Bicipital aponeurosis
What 2 provocative tests are used to test the LCL
- Varus stress test
2. Lateral pivot shift test
