Working memory model Flashcards
1
Q
what is it
A
- theoretical framework of STM that includes several components
- Braddely and Hitch working memory model suggests that STM is not a single store but rather consists of a number if different stores
2
Q
the central executive
A
- an attention control system that monitors and coordinates the operations of the other subordinate components which are called slave systems
- it decides how and when the slave systems are used
- capacity to focus attention, to divide attention between two or more sources and to switch attention from one task to another
- limited capacity cannot attend to a lot of things
- modality free, process and sensory information whether it be auditory or visual
3
Q
the phonological look
A
-auditory component of STM and it is divided into two components
- the articulatory control system and phonological store
4
Q
the articulatory control system
A
-linked to speech production which can hold information in a verbal form
- when you try to rmbr a telephone number and repeat it to yourself
- hold words ready for cognitive tasks (as you prepare to speak)
5
Q
phonological store
A
- linked to speech perception
- holds auditory memoru
- memory trace can only last from 1.5 to 2 seconds if it is not rehearsed by the articulatory control system
- can receive information directly from sensory memory in the form of uditory material
- any activity that requires retention of a verbal sequence; counting objects would rely on the phonological loop
6
Q
the visuospatial sketchpad
A
- visual component of STM
- temporary store for visual and spatial information from either sensory memroy or LTM
- includes storage and manipulation of visual patterns and spatial movements
- helps us rmbr not only what visual information is important but also where it is
7
Q
the episodic buffer
A
-temporarily holds several sources of information actve at the same time
- auditory and visual information together as well as info from LTM
- act as temporary and passive display store
