Sampling techniques Flashcards

1
Q

what is sampling

A

the process of selecting a representative group from the population under study. A sample is a group of people who take part in the envestiagtions.

Q

random sampling

A

a sample in which everyone in teh target population has the same probability of being chosen
- random samples are the best method of selecting a representative sample from the population of interest, increasing the generalisability of the study
- however, if the target population is too large the random sampling is not really possible

Q

slf-selected sampling (volunteer sampling)

A

includes individuals who have chosen to be involved in a study
- main type of non-probability sampling methods
- have a strong interest in the main topic of the study

Q

advantage and disadvantage of volunteer sampling

A

advanatges
- achieves a large sample size through reaching a wide audience (online advertisemnt)
disadvantages
- sample that is not representative of the targe t population. genrelaisation limited

Q

opportunity sampling

A

non-probability sampling methods which mean that participants are not chosen randomly
- based on convenience
- opportunity sample is obtained by asking members of the population of interest if tehy would take pat in you research

Q

advantages and disadvatages of opportunity sampling

A

advantages
- easy and quick way to get a sample and often used in research
disadvat=ntages
- suffers from selection bias, not necessarily representative of teh target population being studied
