Reconstructive memory Flashcards

1
Q

Introduction

A

memory is the cognitive process through which one encodes, stored and retrieves information. Memories are not fixed and can be lost, changes or even crated. Memory is an active process that involves teh reconstructions of information.

Q

what is reconstructibe memory

A

the theory suggested by Bartlett assumes that humans are active information processors who construct memories as they try to make sense of what happens based on what they already know.
- schemas stored in LTM allow people to make sense of teh world around them and combine infromation to make sens eof their experiences, Individuals retain the knowledge that most aligns to their schemas and amke more sense for them. If information is unclear or missing the brain fills in the blanks on their pre-existing schemas.

Q

misinformaion effect

A

the reconstructive nature of memory based on schema processing could explain memory distortions. Misinformation effect is teh tendency for the information learned after ane vent to interfer with our original memory of what happened. It illustrates how easily memory can be influenced and raisied concerns about the reliability of memory

Q

what can reconstructive memory also lead to

A

can also lead to selective memory, which is the ability to retrieve certain facts and events but not others. Informations may be remebered ina distorted was since memories are essentialy imaginative reconstructions of the originals information in the light of each indiciduals past exoeriences and expectations.
- Memories are constructed after the evnt and can be usceptible to post-event informations such as the way a quetsion is phrased.
