Baddeley and Hitch (1974) Flashcards
1
Q
aim
A
the researchers aimed to investigate if there is evidence that reasoning tasks share a common workin memory system
2
Q
procedure
A
-dual task technique: oarticipants carry out two tasks at once
- participants were given digit strings to repeat while reading and memorizing text at the same time
- used articulatory supression
- One condition: participants were asked to repeat digits aloud while memorized text
- capacity of the inner voice was filled up, how human memory performs without it
- Second condition: participants has to produce a random sequence of digits aloud while memorizing teh information from the text
3
Q
results
A
- concurrent tasks decresed accuracy of recalll of the information
- first condition: recalling info from the text made use of the central executive and the digit span take made use of the phonological loop
- not significantly hindered bc the tasks used different modalities
- second condition: the participants hd to use more attentional resources bc they needed to take into account the previous digits that tehy ad selected
- impaired their ability to recal info since both tasks used the same modality
4
Q
conclusion
A
- findings suggest that STM consists of several different components which can work independantely of one another
- STM is a flexible and complex system which consists of central control mechanism assisted by a number if skave systems
- if two task interfer with each other so that one or both are impaired.
