emortions play a key role in how memory is formed, strengthening memories
what is FBM
first proposed by Brown and Kulik they defined it as an exceptionally vivid ‘snashot’ of teh moemnt when a surprising and emotionally arousing event happened. Predicted that memories of highly emotional events will be exceptionally clear, detailed and accurate. According to Brown adn Kulik, FBMs are: more vivid, last longer, more consistent and more accurate. They are a type of episodic memory or explicit memory
6 feature of FBm
people remember in detail: - place
- ongoing activity
- informant
- own affect
- other’s affect
- aftermath
they are maintained through overt rehearsal
What plays a critical role in FBm
Event exceeds critical levels of surprise, a permanent record of the details and circumstances surrounding the experience is created. Emotional events are better remembered than less emorional events- because of the critical role of the amygdala which is in the temporal lobe which is critical to the brain’s emotional circuit and in emotional memories.
