Multi-store memory model Flashcards

1
Q

what is the model of memory

A

model of memory is an outline of the different stores and processes indicating how memory might work according to available evidence

Q

what are the assumptions of MSM

A
  • model argues that memory consists of a number of separate locations in which information is stored
  • memory processes are sequential
  • each memory store operates in a single, uniform way

Q

`sensory memory

A

sensory information from the world enters sesonsry memory. It is related to different senses, such as hearing and vision.
- important stores: the visual storeand auditory store.
- Duration 1 second for visual stimuli, 2-5 seconds for auditory stimuli

Q

short term memory (STM)

A

temporarily stores a limited amount of information passed on by SM. The capacity is limited to around 7 objects and duration is noramlly about 6-12 seconds and maximum of 30 seconds. STM is quickly lost if not rehearsed. Rehearsal of material in STM plays a key role in determing what is stored in LTM in the MSM of memory.

Q

Long term emmory

A

store is conceptualized as a vast storehouse of information. Indefinite duration an dof potentially unlimited capacity. Coding information into the LTM store is usually by semantic sense

Q

how does this model work

A

short-term memory serves as a gateway by which information can gain access to long term memory. The various memory stores are seen as coponents that operate in conjuction with the permanent memory store through processes such as attention, coding and rehearsal. Rehearsal is vital to keeping material active in STM by repeating it until it can be stored in LTM
