Localization of function Flashcards
what is LOF
Theory that certain areas of the brain are responsible for certain psychological functions, e.g. language, memory etc. have certain locations or areas within the brain
parts of the brain
Major parts of the brain include the forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain
forebrain
The forebrain is the largest part of the brain associated with higher order functions such as abstract thought or voluntary action.
-Cerebral cortex is divided into 4 sections called lobes
Frontal
Parietal
Occipital
Temporal
midbrain
-Below the cerebral cortex and above the hindbrain, placing it near the center of the brain
-Includes the limbic system and several structures such as the hypothalamus and amygdala.
hindbrain
At the back of the head and coordinates functions that are fundamental to survival.
strict localization
idea that there is strict correspondence between the psychological functions and brain areas and that all functions can be clearly mapped on the brain
relative localization
one brain area may be responsible for a function but not exclusively, and other brain areas may also take over the function
