Working Memory Model Flashcards
1
Q
What is the working memory model?
A
- Representation of short term memory
- Suggests that STM is a dynamic processor of multiple sub systems which process different types of information
2
Q
Central executive
A
- Attentional process that monitors incoming data
- Makes decisions and allocates slave systems/sub systems to tasks
- Limited processing capacity
3
Q
Phonological loop
A
- Deals with auditory information
- Preserves the order in which the information arrives
Sub divided into 2 sections:
- Phonological store - stores words you hear
- Articulatory process - allows maintenance rehearsal (repeating sounds in a loop to keep them in memory)
4
Q
Visuo-spatial sketchpad
A
- The VSS stores visual and/ or spatial information when required.
- Example: if you are being asked to remember how many windows a building has you visualise it.
- Limited capacity
5
Q
Episodic buffer
A
- Newest addition to the WMM as it was added in 2000 by Baddeley
- Temporary store for info
- Brings together material from other subsystems into 1 memory
- Seen as a storage component to central executive
- links working memory to LTM
