A

5 level sequence in which basic needs must be met before higher psychological needs are met, such as self actualisation.

  • Physiological needs (Hunger, sleep)
  • Safety and security (Being in a safe and comfortable environment)
  • Love and belongingness (Having friendships and intimate relationships)
  • Self esteem (Being comfortable and confident in ones own abilities and worth)
  • Self actualisation (Achieving full potential of what you are capable of)

Evaluation

A

Strength:
Humanistic psychologists are praised for bringing the human back into psychology and promoting positive images of the human condition without any other determining forces such as biology.

Limitation:
Ignores cultural biases
Focuses on more individualist cultures such as western countries and doesn’t take in account of collectivist cultures such as India which emphasise the needs of the group.
