Assumptions
The humanistic approach focuses on humans having self determining and free will to our consciousness.
Free will
Humans can make choices not determined by biological or external forces.
Self actualisation
The idea that someone has reached their full potential and becoming what your are capable of.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs
5 level sequence in which basic needs must be met before higher psychological needs are met, such as self actualisation.
- Physiological needs (Hunger, sleep)
- Safety and security (Being in a safe and comfortable environment)
- Love and belongingness (Having friendships and intimate relationships)
- Self esteem (Being comfortable and confident in ones own abilities and worth)
- Self actualisation (Achieving full potential of what you are capable of)
Congruence
When someone’s self concept and ideal are seemed to match.
Conditions of worth
When a parent puts limits or boundaries on their love for their children. (I’ll only love if…)
Evaluation
Strength:
Humanistic psychologists are praised for bringing the human back into psychology and promoting positive images of the human condition without any other determining forces such as biology.
Limitation:
Ignores cultural biases
Focuses on more individualist cultures such as western countries and doesn’t take in account of collectivist cultures such as India which emphasise the needs of the group.
