Memory - Explanations for forgetting Flashcards
Interference
Forgetting because one memory blocks another which causes one memory or both to be distorted.
Proactive interference
Forgetting occurs when older memories, already stored, disrupt the recall of newer memories. Forgetting is greater when memories are similar.
Retroactive interference
Forgetting occurs when newer memories disrupt the recall of older memories, already stored. Degree of forgetting, again, is greater when memories are similar
Retrieval failure
Form of forgetting when we don’t have the necessary cues to access memory. Memory is available but not accessible without required cue.
Cues
A trigger of information that allows us to access a certain memory. Cues may be external (environmental context) or internal (mood or degree of drunkenness)
