Stages of attachment
A
Developmental theories suggest and identify a series of a sequence of different behaviours linked to specific ages.

Stage 1: Asocial stage
A
- Baby first recognises and begins forming bonds with its carers.
- Babies show preference in familiar adults that provide them with comfort and easier to calm them.

Stage 2: Indiscriminate attachment
A
- 2-7 months babies display more observable behaviour
- Preference for people rather than inanimate objects
- Recognise and prefer familiar adults
- Accept cuddles and comfort from any adult
- Don’t usually show separation anxiety.

Stage 3: Specific attachment
A
- 7 months babies start to display anxiety towards strangers
- Anxious when separated from particular adult (65% of the time its the mother)
- Specific attachment is formed at this stage and adult is termed as primary attachment figure

Stage 4: Multiple attachments
A
- Attachment extends from just one adult, to multiple who they usually spend time with
- These relationships are called secondary attachments,
- By the age of 1 year, majority of infant have developed multiple attachments.
