What was the main reason for Wolsey’s downfall?
His failure to secure Henry VIII a divorce from Catherine of Aragon.
Why did Henry VIII believe Wolsey would of easily been able to get him a divorce?
Henry thought since Wolsey was Papal Legate he could get the divorce as he had enough influence over Rome but when Wolsey failed to get the divorce Henry lost his patience with him.
Why was it hard for Wolsey to achieve the divorce?
Wolsey did not want to break church law and this made Henry think Wolsey was more loyal to the Pope than himself.
What were the other reasons for Wolsey’s downfall?
Failure with foreign policy and the Amicable Grant.
Did the nobles have anything to do with Wolsey’s downfall?
Yes, they had always resented Wolsey as he was from common birth and they had been trying to get rid of him since he got power but Henry only started listening to them once the other problems with Wolsey had started.
What happened once Wolsey was sacked from government?
He was arrested on the charge called “Preamunire” which when someone is more loyal to a foreign monarch over their own.
