Negative feelings towards the clergy because of their behaviour.
What was anti-papalism?
Negative feelings towards the Pope and believing he shouldn’t be the head of the church in England
What was erasitianism?
The belief that the monarch should be head of the church, not the Pope.
What was heresy?
Having other religious beliefs other than that of the monarch.
Who were the clergy?
Priests, bishops, etc.
What is a diocese?
An area controlled by a bishop.
Who was John Colet?
A clergyman, who in 1511 did a sermon where he attacked the ambition and worldliness of the clergy and questioned their greed for wealth and power.
What led to anti-clerical feelings?
Absenteesim.
Pluralism.
Simony.
Education of the clergy.
What was absenteeism?
When a bishop didn’t reside in their diocese.
What was pluralism?
When clergymen held multiple positions within the church.
What is simony?
The buying and selling of positions within the church.
Why was it a problem that some of the clergy weren’t educated?
It meant that people couldn’t be taught properly about the teachings of the church as the clergy didn’t know what they were talking about.
What was the Hunne affair?
Hunne was in prison after being accused of heresy. He was found dead in prison but no one was charged with his death and this is why people believed the church was corrupt.
