WK2 Cognitive dev = Piaget and development Flashcards
1
Q
What does Piaget say about development
A
- 4 stages
- cant miss a stage
- have to pass through each one
- Rough ages are associated, but aren’t concrete
2
Q
What are the four stages
A
Sensorimotor, Pre-operational, Concrete-operational, Formal operations
3
Q
What does Piaget say about the Sensorimotor stage
A
- infants use their senses
- object permeance begins to develop
- infants use logical, goal directed actions
- infants struggle with reverse thinking
4
Q
What does Piaget say about the Pre-operational stage
A
- individuals use symbolic thinking
- language rapidly develops
- egocentric
- Individuals struggle with conservation tasks, reverse thinking and have only one way logic
5
Q
What does Piaget say about the concrete operational stage
A
- confidently navigate logical stability, reverse thinking and conservation tasks
- classification = can group via characteristics
- seriation = can arrange objects into order (e.g via size)
- but their logical system is tied to the physical reality, and they’re unable to reason about hypothetical or abstract problems
6
Q
What does Piaget say about the Formal operations stage
A
- can handle complex issues
- imagine possibilities
- hypothetical and deductive reasoning
- imagine future
- ideas less tied to physical reality
