What is motivation?
- Feeling that arouses, directs and maintains behaviour
- State/trait
What is motivation as a state?
Only feeling motivated in certain contexts and times
What is motivation as a trait?
A strong need to achieve across a range of times and circumstances
What are the three types of motivation?
- Amotivation
- Intrinsic
- Extrinsic
What is Amotivation?
complete lack of intent to act
What is intrinsic motivation?
- eager to learn and enjoy it
- activities are their own reward
- welcome challenges
What is extrinsic motivation?
- Motivation created by external factors like rewards or punishments
- reluctant to engage in learning tasks and dislike learning
- avoids challenges
What are the four levels of internal drive?
- External regulation
- Introjected regulation
- Identification
- Integrated regulation
What is external regulation in internal drive
Highly extrinsic, actions completely controlled by consequences
What is introjected regulation in internal drive
Participate to avoid guilt or negative self-perceptions
What is identification in internal drive
Participate with larger interest, serve a larger goal that is particularly motivating
What is integrated regulation in internal drive
Participate with interest and to receive extrinsic reward
