WK1: Mind and brain : The Brain and Cognitive development Flashcards
What is the Peripheral Nervous System?
the sensory and motor neurons that connect the central nervous system to the rest of the body
What is the role of the Forebrain?
Allows for complex thoughts and behaviours
What is the role of the cerebral cortex?
To carry out higher cognitive, emotional, sensory and motor functions
What is the role of the Cerebellum?
co-ordinates balance and skilled movements
What is the role of the Thalamus?
Involved in verbal info and the ability to learn
What are the role of each side of the brain cortex?
Left - Language processing
Right - Spatial-visual , Non verbal information, emotion
What is the difference between the mind and the brain?
- Brain is a physical organ, but the mind is mental
- Brain = palpable, mind = isn’t
- Brain = made up of nerve cells and blood vessels, mind = made up of thought, memory and emotion
What Nervous System is the brain apart of and what is the role of this system?
- central nervous system
- combines received info around all parts of the body
What are the three major divisions of the brain?
- Forebrain
- Midbrain
- Hindbrain
What is the role of the Midbrain?
Co-ordinates simple movement with senses
What is the role of the Hindbrain?
Base of brain and runs the fundamental body processes
Name the 5 main structures of the brain.
- Cerebellum
- Hippocampus
- Amygdala
- Thalamus
- Cerebral Cortex
What is the role of the Hippocampus?
learning and memory
What is the role of the Amygdala?
emotional control
What are the 6 divisions in the cerebral cortex
- frontal lobe
- motor cortex
- sensory cortex
- Parietal lobe
- Occipital vision
- Temporal lobe
