Wind Flashcards
Wind
Horizontal movement of air from area of high pressure to area of low pressure
Isobar
Curved lines drawn on a surface weather map that joins areas of MSL (measure in hectopascals (hPa)
Lows
Cyclones/ depressions
Lower pressure on centre than areas on outside
In Northern hemisphere wind flows counter clockwise
Labeled with red L
Highs
Anticyclones
Regions of high pressure
Pressure increase in centre
In northern hemisphere wind flows clockwise
Labeled with blue H
Troughs
Pressure pattern formed by isobars on map where bulge occurs in the side of a low pressure
Brings clouds, showers, wind shift
Ridges
Bulge in the side of a high pressure
Jet stream
Fast flowing air currents in the atmosphere
Main jet streams are near tropopause, flowing west to east
METAR
Routine weather report (issued every hour)
SPECI
Special weather report
Issued when there’s significant deterioration/ improvement in airport weather conditions
Stratiform cloud
Develop horizontally
Stable conditions, air is restricted and spread out
Cumuliform cloud
Develop vertically
Resemble puffs/ towers, flat bottom rounded top
