Surveillance Flashcards
Radar
Determine the position of objects by measuring the amount of time that elapses between the transmission of a radio wave pulse and its reflected return
PSR
Primary surveillance radar
Rely on reflected radio waves
No additional equipment required on aircraft
No cooperation from aircraft required
Accuracy reduce with distance
SSR
Secondary surveillance radar
Interrogation-reply system
Aircraft required to carry transponders capable of providing response to ground-based interrogation signals
Depend on active replies from aircraft’s transponder
Accuracy reduced with distance
RSE
Radar site equipment
Housing that contains radar & electronic equipment necessary for detecting aircraft
2 types of RSE
TSR (terminal surveillance radar)
ISSR (independent secondary surveillance radar)
TSR
Terminal surveillance radar
Provides digitized PSR & SSR targets, and weather
ISSR
Independent secondary surveillance radar
Provides accurate range & azimuth positioning for aircraft with transponders
MLAT
Multilateration
Position is determined by comparing the fractional differences in times that a response to an interrogation signal is received
Aircraft required to carry transponders
Depend of active replies from aircraft’s transponder
Not as susceptible to some of the issues of accuracy
SMGCS
Surface movement guidance and control system
Used to provide controllers with accurate position on aircraft & vehicles operating on surface
Data display aircraft & vehicle positions overlaid on map of airport’s runway & taxiway
Require no additional equipment
Does not require cooperation from aircraft
Not as susceptible to issues of accuracy
ADS-B
Automatic dependent surveillance - broadcast
Allow aircraft to determine its position via satellite navigation
Dependent on aircraft systems, automatic (requires no input from pilot)
Requires aircraft to use GNSS
Aircraft use GNSS to determine their own position & a broadcast communication link to replay their position to receiver station which is then relayed to ATC
Not susceptible to position of aircraft or length of time between radar sweeps
FUSION
Merge/ fuse surveillance information from a variety of tracking systems together to present most accurate position information for ATS personnel
CAATS
Canadian Automated Air Traffic System
Electronic flight data processing system that stores & correlates flight information (ex. flight plan)
CSiT
CAATS Situational Display
Interface between controller and CAATS system
IIDS
integrated information display system
Provide integrated access to a variety of essential operational information
What is included in IIDS
OIDS-R
CVIDS
NARDS
EXCDS
