Designated Areas of Controlled Airspace Flashcards
Controlled airspace includes:
Controlled zones
Terminal control zones
Control area extensions
Transition areas
Control zones
Designated areas around certain aerodromes
Keep IFR aircraft within controlled airspace during approaches
Dimension of control zones
If there’s a civilian control tower within a terminal control area: radius of control zone is 7NM
If not, radius is typically 5NM
Special case (ex. military), radius is 10 NM
Capped at 3000ft above aerodrome elevation (AAE)
Military control zones capped at 6000ft AAE
Terminal control areas (TCAs)
exists at high-volume airports to provide ATC service to arriving/ departing/ enroute aircraft
Dimension of terminal control areas
Inner circle: 12NM radius based at 1200ft AGL
Intermediate circle: 35NM radius based at 2200ft AGL
Outer limit: 45NM radius from the aerodrome geographic coordinated based at 9500ft AGL
Control area extensions (CAEs)
Established at some busy airports where controlled airspace is insufficient to permit required separation between IFR arrivals and departures
Dimension of control area extensions
From 2200ft AGL up to, but not including 18000ft ASL
Transition areas
Established when it is considered advantageous/ necessary to provide additional controlled airspace for containment of IFR operations
Dimension of transition area
From 700ft AGL to the base of the overlying controlled airspace
Radius is usually 15NM from the aerodrome coordinates (must be large enough to contain all aerodrome-published instrument approach procedures)
