Why Was Hitler Able To Become Chancellor In January 1933? Flashcards
How did hitler use violence and great to become chancellor?
Point: Nazi personal army created fear by beating opponents
Evidence: 400,000 SA beat up opponents and communists.
Analysis: everyone was so intimidated by the nazis they didn’t oppose them because they were extremely violent to opposition and had a bigger army than Germany had therefore they could do what they wanted. This meant there was only the nazi party to elect and therefore hitler could easily become chancellor.
How did hitlers strong leadership make him chancellor?
Point:hitlers strong leadership appealed to many in thought times.
Evidence: nazi belief of fuhrerprinzip (strong leadership) appealed to so many in times when they had been humiliated in WW1 and had a weak Weimar government.
Analysis: He wanted a better future for Germany like all of the German people and in times when they were struggling and governments/political parties were all fighting with each other. He was strong and wanted to restore Germany and made promises of a brighter future which made him easy to follow.
How did racist beliefs allow hitler to become chancellor?
Point: nazis blamed Jews for problems facing Germany
Evidence: all of Germany was humiliated by the loss of WW1 and the nazis provided a scapegoat who were the Jews who they believed forced them to surrender in 1918
Analysis: Germany wanted to blame someone so hitler provided the Jews as a scapegoat and the Germans were angry so were happy with this. This also allowed hitler to make them believe Germany could be restored because he made it clear that Jews wouldn’t have any place in this society as they were labelled as sub human therefore to Germans their country could be strong again
How did promises to the people allow hitler to become chancellor?
Point: made promises to desperate workers and unemployed people
Evidence: “arbeit and Brot” work and bread poster produced by goebells.
Analysis: German workers were desperate and struggling to survive and the nazis solved their problems by giving them food and work therefore the German people felt grateful to them and so put their trust in the nazis because they helped them so much which won the vote of the lower classes.
How did anti-communist beliefs allow hitler to become chancellor?
Point: nazi opposition to communists was poluplar among German middle class people.
Evidence: Russia communist revolution of 1917 scared richer middle class Germans so they were happy when SA beat up communists.
Analysis: they were scared of their property, land and money being taken in a revolution so we’re reassured when nazis beat up communists so they won the vote of middle class Germans.
How did economic problems allow hitler to become chancellor?
Point: radical ideas were popular at a time when Germany was in crisis and government was weak.
Evidence: Wall Street crash in 1929 meant poverty and unemployment soared while nazis promised to abolish treaty of Versailles.
Analysis: German people were struggling to survive and Germany kept having to pay damages for WW1 as part of the treaty of Versailles. This meant Germany was being humiliated and so by the nazis abolishing it it meant German people had hope that they could be free from poverty caused by others and so were angry and were happy to accept radical nazi ideas.
