How Effective Was Opposition To The Nazis? Flashcards
How effective was youth opposition?
Point: small scale opposition however not always caught
Evidence: edelweiss pirates wore edelweiss flower and picked fights with hitler youth
Analysis: they’d wear the flower to be part of the group which was passive however they actively disrupted hitler youth and didn’t get caught doing it showing their resistance was somewhat effective. However they were only in one region of Germany and so had a small scale impact therefore resistance wasn’t completely effective.
How effective was the youth in opposing the nazis? (Not effective version)
Point: when youth organisations gained lots of support they were quickly shit down
Evidence: Swing kids grew long hair and listened to jazz music but many were sent to camps.
Analysis: they had very good passive resistance which went directly against what the nazis told them to do however it didn’t have much of an impact because nothing actually changed and most of them got sent to camps for it therefore it was not effective because it didn’t cause any real change and they got caught.
How effective was the church in opposing nazi rule?
Point: power held by the church meant impossible for nazis to stop all resistance
Evidence: letter from pope read out on Palm Sunday 1937 in all Catholic Churches criticising nazi methods
Analysis: so many people heard the anti nazi words so it was large scale, people would’ve listened to it because it’s from the pope and he couldn’t be attracted because he’s too high status and lives in Vatican City. Couldn’t stop resistance so was very effective
How effective was political opposition to nazis?
Point: terror organisations meant political parties were underground or divided
Evidence: social democrat leaders fled to Prague in 1933 leaving them without strong leadership
Analysis: no organisation of resistance so it couldn’t be large scale or effective because lots were arrested and their ideas couldn’t get to the German people because they were divided.
