If a King was not installed then there was a possibility if civil war. This caused them to appeal because without a King, many claimants would compete and the country would be ruined.

The outsider appeal meant that Edward would be unbiased. This caused them to appeal to Edward as everyone is Scotland was biased meaning that no fair decision could be made from within.
